The Talking Pole_Intro.png

BACKGROUND

Artboard 2.png

In 2015, Dr.Cha was hospitalized for three weeks to treat cancer in his working place, Samsung hospital.

Through his experience as an inpatient, Dr. Cha was able to put himself in the shoes of the patient, which made him realize that there are many inconveniences that cause psychological anxiety during a hospital stay.

Therefore, he started to ask himself: How about creating a new type of IV Pole that is with patients 24-hours that can talk to patients and entertain them?

Dr. Cha brought his novel idea to our team, and we concluded it was a very interesting one. Our team began to work to executive the idea.

We conducted the interviews with 10 people who have had hospitalization experience at least one week.

** What we learned from the research**

We initially thought: “What if the IV pole could become a talking friend to inpatients?”

However, as we were brainstorming, we decided to postpone the speech function for the future, taking into account the problems that could arise because of the noise generated in shared rooms. Instead, we decided to focus on sharing information and enabling easy communication between patients and medical staff members.

Yet, we decided to keep the name “Talking pole” to emphasize that the IV pole would serve as a reliable friend to patients

QUICK PROTOTYPE

With engineers from Samsung Electronics, we made quick prototype working actually with sensors.

We made a rough user scenario film during at Hackathon.

USER SCENARIO

Because of commercial issues between affiliates, I was not able to move to Samsung’s creative lab to finish this project (I worked for Cheil, the advertising agency subsidiary of Samsung).

I was therefore not able to participate in the final output design work (the final UI design in the photos below was designed by other UX designers.

FINAL OUTCOME

Our team project ‘Talking Pole’ was selected by Samsung Creative Lab for year-long funding.

2017 Korea International Medical & Hospital Equipment Show

It was my first experience of Hackathorn. Moreover, this experience was when I became firmly determined to pursue a master to study emerging technologies with which I would be able to leverage my ideas, and I could create meaningful and sustainable service design with various perspectives which would help continue this type of work in the future. Although people from my team were all from different fields and walks of life, we spent nights full of discussions in order to achieve a shared goal. Up until that day, I had never felt such exhilaration through an accomplishment. I am deeply grateful to the members of my team, Samsung's top talent who stayed up all night working on this project.
